Sabrina Desmarteau

Painting
Sabrina Desmarteau was born in Montreal in 1982 and grew up in Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu. Whenever the opportunity arose, she would go to Montreal. Even after moving away, she always felt like a Montrealer at heart. Now, she has been living and working in the metropolis for many years, having returned to the neighborhood where she was born. In her artistic approach, Desmarteau’s research focuses on Montreal architecture, which she considers an integral part of the urban heritage, with a current environmental concern. To express her sense of belonging to her city, she draws on significant historical events or simply the buildings and infrastructures that people living in Montreal encounter daily. Her works tell the story of Montreal through its buildings. In her art, the accumulation of lines and geometric shapes supports the complexity of the constantly changing environment around us. Her objective is to preserve these constructions, which transform over time, and to honor the memory of the place. Art has always been a part of Desmarteau. She thrives through moments of creation and sharing, feeling privileged to make art every day. She considers herself fortunate to be a female artist, especially recognizing that there was a time when only men could pursue this profession. Since 2022, Desmarteau has been represented by Galerie L’Original. Her work is exhibited in both of the gallery’s locations in Montreal.
